Project Title: Strengthening Governance and Democratization Processes in Kenya and the East and Central Africa region.

Project Number: UDF-KEN-09-296

Project Duration: 24 Months

This is a 2 year project starting March 2011 to February 2013 and funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). The project aims at strengthening the capacity of the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to enable it to effectively discharge its mandate; build the capacity of grassroots organizations in elections observation and establishment of a structured civil society  domestic election observation programme; address citizens’ lack of awareness on electoral processes, voter apathy and ineffective participation in governance and electoral processes through civic/voter education; enhance access to and utility of the ACE webpage within the East and Central Africa Region by availing information on electoral processes on the ACE website in Kiswahili language.

To achieve the above objectives, specific guided study tours in selected countries, where such office has been successful, will be conducted for targeted personnel in the Office of Registrar of Political Parties. These study tours will enable the personnel to learn and adopt best practices in administration, management and regulation of political parties. Capacity building workshops on use and application of modern technology and other methodologies to support structured and effective monitoring and observation of elections will be held for civil society/community/faith-based organizations. An interactive Kiswahili language section will be designed and activated with targeted electoral processes materials in Kiswahili language. Civic/Voter education awareness campaigns targeting marginalized regions and groups (the youth, women, people with disability and the illiterate) will be conducted using mobile film.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the Office of Registrar of Political Parties, selected civil society organizations, community/faith-based organizations, International IDEA, NDI and Film Corporation of Kenya.
