Enhancing Gender Responsive Policies in Institutions of Governance

The Institute for Education in Democracy (IED) is implementing a two-year project themed “Enhancing Gender Responsive Policies in Institutions of Governance”. This project is funded by our development partner – The Commonwealth Foundation – and is aimed at strengthening institutions of governance to adopt gender responsive policies through participatory platforms.

In particular, IED will engage the Registrar of Political Parties to generate indicators and tools which will guide Political Parties to develop affirmative action regulations. This project will also facilitate consultative learning forums where political parties will develop mechanisms for advancing women’s political participation which meet Constitutional provisions.

On January 21, 2014, IED hosted representatives from The Commonwealth Foundation who were undertaking a spot check on the status of the implementation of this project. The Commonwealth team comprised of the Foundations Director, Mr. Vijay Krishnarayan, the Communications Support Officer, Mr. Joe Byrde, the Grants Officer, Ms Liliana Rodrigues and the Capacity Building Officer, Ms Reineira Arguellos.

We were also joined by our partners from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties; the Registrar, Ms Lucy Ndung’u, and the Legal Officer Ms. Geraldine Ferraro. Other participants in the meeting included our beneficiaries from The National Alliance Party (TNA); the Programmes / Communications Acting Director, Mr. Frankline Mukwanja and his colleague, Ms Jane Mwaniki.
