As part of its democracy education initiative, the Council for a Community of Democracies (CCD) proposes to implement a pilot project in Kenya. The project will consist of meetings among stakeholders with the ultimate goal of creating a National Democracy Education Action Plan (NDEAP). This is one of a series of pilot projects that CCD, operating under a grant from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), will implement in Ghana, Kosovo, Mongolia, Nepal, South Africa and Kenya. The Institute for Education in Democracy (IED) will facilitate this process in Kenya. The first workshop was held on Friday 13th March 2015.
2014 was a momentous year for IED as we embarked on implementing the first year of our New Strategic Plan 2014-2018. It has its genesis in many conversations,Observations Research and consultations that ran concurrently amongst scholars, practitioners and consultants in the democratic governance sector in Kenya.
The Kenyan National Assembly has proposed the introduction of a Constitutional Amendment Bill that seeks to amend the Constitution so that the general election will be held on the third Monday in December of the fifth year as opposed to the current Constitutional provision under Article 101 for elections to be held on the second Tuesday in August of every 5th year.
The Institute for Education in Democracy (IED) is implementing a two-year project themed “Enhancing Gender Responsive Policies in Institutions of Governance”. This project is funded by our development partner – The Commonwealth Foundation – and is aimed at strengthening institutions of governance to adopt gender responsive policies through participatory platforms.
